Mental Health

Mental Health can influence day by day life, relationships, and even physical wellbeing. It can also incorporate to people's capacity in being able to enjoy life.

Insecurities tie into mental health because if you have a low self esteem and think that you aren't worthy,  you may be more prone to acquiring mental disorders.

There are various conditions of mental disorders, but as I did my research, I found that anxiety and depression are prominent mental health conditions in my school community.

ANXIETY

What is Anxiety?

As stated by the American Psychological Association (APA), "anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure."

How does having anxiety affect someone with a low self-esteem?

There are 5 major types of Anxiety Disorders, but often Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is frequently seen within individuals with a low self-esteem. People tend to misread the amount of acceptance and rejection they receive in life, which then drives individuals to have a low self esteem. People who have anxiety tend to have a magnified feeling of this because of uncontrollable feelings of worry. "It is believed that our self-esteem level is determined by how much acceptance or rejection we experience in the social world. Our self-esteem is developed due to how we view other people reacting to us," stated in an article, How To Improve Self Esteem With Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

In addition, having insecurities that causes you to have a low self esteem can be especially harder for those who suffer from a mental health disorder.

Here are ways you can do to cope with Anxiety:

  • Recognize what you're feeling to better understand your triggers

  • Talk to someone you trust or a trusted authority- like a Therapist

  • Download mindfulness apps like "Breathe" on any of your smart devices to help control your breathing

  • Place your hand over your heart to try and slow it down, feeling it go in and out

  • Relax yourself by either: drawing, listening to music, going for a walk, using stress balls or fidget toys, etc.

Depression

DEPRESSION

What is Depression?

Depression is a mental health disorder in which it can interfere with your daily activities. Some of the symptoms of depression includes: extreme sadness, hopefulness, loss of interest in things that used to bring you joy, decreased energy, insomnia, changes in appetite, contemplation of death or suicide, and irritability.

How does having depression affect self-esteem?

Depression can affect self-esteem because when you are suffering from depression, you already have a sense of feeling that you aren't of worthiness. This can affect your self-esteem because of the already apparent similarity thought patterns between the two, like persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities that used to bring satisfaction. Because of the negative perception of one's self, it leads to a pessimistic view of their environment.

Ways you can do to cope with depression:

  • Reach out to people who will listen attentively and compassionately without judgement

  • Write in a journal or do something that relaxes you

  • Joining a support group

  • Getting enough sleep (ideally 8-10 hours for teens)

  • Do a physical activity
